BTEC National Diploma Year 2 - Digital Showcase Marketing response
Marketing brief:
• Create a campaign to promote the digital showcase to be held at the Open Day on 24th June.
• Create promotional materials which reflect the work of the media students with a view to attracting new students.
• Discuss with client effective distribution channels.
Marketing feedback on progress so far.
Project Plan:
• Generally an excellent working document.
• Clear delineation of tasks and responsibilities.
• Allowed for appropriate amount of time for planning, action and feedback.
• Some of the dates move around in the plan, the plan could work better if the event or sequences of events are logged first with the dates next to them, so the timeline is more clear.
Poster 1: Alien
Design & concept:
• Clear about the event, time and location
• We liked the idea of using the ‘alien’ creature and spaceships to demonstrate ‘visitors’ coming to see the Shipley College digital showcase.
• Good mixture of pictures – male/female, ethnicity
• Clever device to include branding with the Shipley College logo on the t-shirt.
• Dark background makes the text stand out.
Suggestions for improvement:
• The features on the first picture of female student are lost – Can the colouring be readjusted slightly?
Poster 2: Graffiti
Design & concept:
• Great use of neon and bright colours and patterns, to draw the audience in to come and look at the poster.
• Hidden images of the girl and boy on skateboard in blue glow as part of the background ties in with the graffiti and graffiti art/culture theme.
• The design and images work well on the dark background.
• Re-coloured Shipley College logo, works well with the rest of the design.
Suggestions for improvement:
• Can the font characters in Digital Showcase heading be more spaced out so that it is easier to read?
Something to consider: Although the images of the skater boy and girl work well with the background, do you think that they are a good representation of male/female roles? The boy is active, the girl is passive.
Poster 3: Graphic novel style comic
Design & concept:
• Really impressive concept of the comic book style story telling with great artwork.
• Images, shading, layout really well thought out.
• Attention to detail is apparent.
• The poster draws the audience to come and look at it because of the artwork itself, however some elements such as, what the poster is for is not always clear.
Suggestions for improvement:
• Speech bubbles may be difficult to read even when printed on A3, may not be ideal for the purpose of the poster.
• People really need to look at the poster carefully to understand its purpose.
• The image and the message of the man flying out of the window/using violence may not be suited to the audience. It may also be disliked by certain groups of people. From a college point of view we would not want to promote the use of violence as a means of attracting people to the college.
Summary:
All the posters are technically competent and include a really good mix of styles to represent what can be accomplished on this course. It is apparent that the group works well together and can produce work of a really high standard. It was a delight to come and meet the students and hear about their areas of interest and the expertise they brought to the project.
Overall recommendations:
• None of the posters really say WHY people should come to the showcase.
• There needs to be more information about what the showcase is about as people outside your course may not know. Could include; ‘Come and see students’ work’, or ‘check out our work’, ‘ Find out more about the course’.
• Create a campaign to promote the digital showcase to be held at the Open Day on 24th June.
• Create promotional materials which reflect the work of the media students with a view to attracting new students.
• Discuss with client effective distribution channels.

Leaflets
The whole class decided that we should give some task for Joshua and Sean to do in order to complete there unit. We all decided that we should let them design a leaflet for students and people who will be attending the open day. We told both of them that they should keep the theme running through as we all have decided to go through with black and purple neon effect. The product had to be handed in after a week, in order to get feedback in how they could both improve and create a great final product.
This is one of the first idea that josh sent to the class:
